When I Say That You're Stardust - 01/19/14

Don't let anyone tell you that you can be anything;
that if you dream it, you can be;
that you'll get anywhere wishing on stars.
This world was not built to grant your wishes,
nor mine,
and, someday, you'll find
that your blood is required to get very far.
I want you to know this going in.
I don't want you to know
that the world is mostly darkness;
I want you to know
that you're the world's only light.
I don't want you to know
that life is a battlefield;
I want you to know
when and how to fight.
I don't want you to know
your place;
I want you to know
how to scream,
I want you to know
what your words taste like
when they leave your mouth;
how to say "love" and mean it;
how to say "hate" and mean it;
what equality looks like,
what power feels like,
and how to have the parts
of both that you want and need
in order to breathe
a sigh of relief
in this eighty, ninety, hundred year struggle
of your life.

I want you to know
you'll never get anywhere wishing on stars.
I want you to know
you'll get exactly where you are
and you'll never be happy
if you aren't allowed
to watch comet trails in the night
and imagine a utopia
where you don't have to fight
for the right to be
exactly the way you were born.
I want you to know
that a star is more you
than a mirror and
I want you to know
that the same is true
for everyone you meet.
I don't want you to know
that you can be anything
because I want you to know
that you are everything.

Sneaker Wave - 01/17/14

When I was seven,
I was caught up in a sneaker way
while playing on the beach,
but all I remember are bubbles.
There were bubbles
all over the sand,
sea foam
all over the sand,
like the water had all
run away
and left a trail of bubbles
for me to jump on.
I remember jumping on bubbles,
then sea all around me,
then yellow rain boots.
My dad wanted to get me
rain boots
after he pulled me out.

Apparently,
I could have died?

I don't remember that.
I don't remember feeling that
pain, terror, life flashing before my eyes.
I didn't know fear.

But know it now,
to fear the future,
to fear potential pain,
to fear failure,
to fear what's coming,
to fear the night,
to fear fighting for my life.

And I don't think about
jumping on bubbles
anymore.

She Bruises Easily But Heals Quickly - 08/19/13

Before you worry
that she's gonna get hurt
remember:
she's been hurt before.
And, every time,
she picks herself up,
dusts herself off,
and climbs the same damn tree.
She believes that,
rather than finding another tree
that she can scale effortlessly,
she ought to get better
with what she's got
because she's been conditioned
to believe
that happiness doesn't come easily,
that's it's something to be fought for,
something to be earned,
something to be practiced,
something to be learned.
So before you rush in
to bandage her knees,
remember:
she may bruise easily,
but she heals quickly
and she's just going
to get back in that tree.

Second Things - 03/13/13

The second thing I think
when I pick up a pair of scissors
is what I'm going to do with them:
cut paper,
remove price tags,
free hair.
The second thing I think
when I look out over a bridge
is how beautiful the water is.
The second thing I think
when I see a piece of rope

Okay, that's not a good example.
I haven't seen any rope in some time
and I don't know what the second thing I'd think
would be if I did.
What do normal people think
when they see rope?

The second thing I think
when I pick up my razor in the morning
is where I'll be shaving.

I'm waiting for the day
when the second things I think
will be the first things I think
and the first things I think
won't even cross my mind
because those scissors don't cross
my flesh anymore,
so why do those thoughts
still fall past my eyes
and drown heart beats
in nerves;
so why do those thoughts
still linger,
hung from the rafters
of old habits,
the way I still skip meals
not on purpose,
but because I honestly forget,
patterns ingrained no longer in my veins
but parts of me
still think they are.

Wish Granted - 01/30/13

Some  sensual, level woman,
leaning calmly against an aqua bus stop sign,
brilliant aubern hair contrasting,
taking a long, thoughtful look
at the twists and turns of the road,
looked at me
as I paused
and looked at her

and we both said,
"Hello."

Inaccurate Memories of Train Rides and Birthdays - 12/19/12

Unraveling green thread,
tossed blankets
of mossy fabrics,
the oozing motion
of light blue paint
falling on bubbles sheets
falling on the clear edge
of the canvas.

Bandits and robbers
won't take my candy,
only Great Grandma's laughs

I think.

I remember green,
blue,
brown.
Trees, sky, dirt.

Where did the robbers come from?
And the arrhythmia?
And the bumper stickers?
And the stillborns?
And the cantaloupes
in your daughters tubes?

More importantly,
where did all the holidays go
when no one was dying
to celebrate them?

Sierra's Concerto - 10/26/12

Sweet Jupiter rising
Sweet cascade of moons
Flying
Flying for you
Somewhere
Out there
Another body of water
Awaits the spark
That brings it all to life
Rearranges the dice
Turns back time
Sweet Jupiter spinning
Sweet storm clouds look so pretty
So far away
Sweet Jupiter singing
Where no one can hear
Or say
A thing anyway
Sweet Jupiter
All for you

West and Lance - 09/14/12

I wrote you a letter
And I sent it in the mail
And I hope that you get it soon
Because life is better
Though the world is frail
And I need you to know it too

The internet can't deliver
Butterscotch candies
You can't fill and email with glitter
It's enough
To keep in touch
But heartache requires so much
More to keep you from growing bitter

So I wrote it all down on paper
And shoved it all inside
An envelope no bigger
Than the words that I did write
I sealed it with a poem
I signed it with a sigh
I sent it off to no one
Who can't tell truth from lie

I wrote you a poem
And I sent it in the mail
And I hope that it finds its way home
Because despite the world's solemn
And despite the world's ail
I want you to know how I’ve grown

I’ve written 300 poems
About giving up
And only a dozen about trying
I’ve spent so much time
Keeping it all inside
From the actually tears
To the fear of crying

So, Hallelujah,
You can break me down
Any time that you like
Because though he's on the east coast
And she's within a day's bike ride,
It'll always be there names
Those cords bring to mind

So I wrote it all down on paper
And shoved it all inside
An envelope no bigger
Than the words that I did write
I sealed it with a poem
I signed it with a sigh
I sent it off to no one
Who can't tell truth from lie

I won't ever know
Whether it was just a phase
But I know that I never will care
Because each painful step
On each tortured leg
Are my stories to share
Are what got me from there to here

This is what I need to tell you
This is what you need to hear:
I love you, I miss you,
I'll never forget you,
Our friendship grows stronger each year,
You're brilliant, you're beautiful,
Hilarious and wonderful,
Steadfast and noble,
Insane and uncontrollable,
And you've given me the strength
And the hope and the brains
To continue without any fear

So I wrote it all down on paper
And shoved it all inside
An envelope no bigger
Than the words that I did write
I sealed it with a poem
I signed it with a sigh
I sent it off to no one
Who can't tell truth from lie

We Don’t Get Bigger, The World Gets Smaller - 07/04/10

Seemed like
When I was little
When I was just a kid
The whole world
Lit up
On the fourth,
Not just this little bit.
Seemed like
It was the most
Magical
Like it was the most
Beautiful
Like it was the most
Special
Thing in the world.
Like fireworks
Were dragons
And dragons were real.
Like that was cool
Not frightening.
Seemed like I couldn’t wait
To light one off.
Seemed like the world
Was nice.

And it also used to seem
Like holidays
Meant something.
Like there was a reason
That tradition was important
That we had to
Just had to
Make a leaf pile
And jump in it on
Thanksgiving.
Like we had to
Just had to
Wear green on
Saint Patrick’s.
Like a million other little things,
But that’s just it:
They're little things.

And when you miss one,
Just one little thing,
Suddenly it’s not a big deal.
And neither are any of the others.
But that’s a big deal.
The fact that it wasn’t.

Crying because
You feel nothing.
